Space Traveler Reveals Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.
She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The diverse crew also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.
The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a Amazon founder.
