The Princess of Wales is hosting her annual Yuletide celebration at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The 1,600 guests will hear a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Focusing on Love and Generosity

The theme of the service, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

Attending the event are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the concert.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to the public eye subsequent to her illness and medical care, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Musical Talent and Access

Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists backed by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of musical tuition.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been assisted by the trust, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be performing at the concert.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Sisterly Duo

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.

That will encompass Saphia Turner, aged nine, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

This annual carol service will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
